The Sunflower Quilt

Blue Phoenix’s major project for 2021-2022

Launched in Mental Health Week

The creation of the Quilt was inspired by the sunflower
following the light and when the light does not shine the sunflowers turn towards one another. This symbolises our support of one another in times of need. It is powerful metaphor for recovery from mental health issues and the evolution of the peer support movement. That is, those with lived experience supporting others who are going through their own crisis. They show that recovery is possible despite the necessary life style changes that are required to fully participate in society.

Embroiderers from the whole of Southeast Queensland were
invited to participate in the creation of the quilt. Their work gave them the opportunity to be a part of a grass-roots community level initiative to promote discussion and to promote thinking differently about mental health issues. The quilt makers also had the opportunity to express how they were moved by the plight of loved ones, who had experienced mental health issues. These skilful embroiderers, embroidered meaningful, inspirational words penned by people who were affected by mental health issues. The white squares were assembled and sewn together with the patterned nine squares, which were completed by a friend of Blue Phoenix. Further assembly and the quilting were undertaken by another friend of Blue Phoenix.

The quilt was designed, fabrics purchased and the cutting
out process assisted by an anonymous benefactor.

Blue Phoenix would like to acknowledge the generosity of the
people who contributed to the creation of the Quilt; in giving their time, resources, skill, and enthusiasm. This reflected a heart-warming community spirit which emboldened us and touched our hearts

Team members

and Blue Phoenix members

The Quilt has now been hung in the Commission’s new offices.

We have permission to take it down periodically for display purposes, when required.

This is in keeping with Blue Phoenix mission of stigma
reduction by stimulating conversation at the grassroots community level about thinking differently about mental health issues.

So let’s talk

about mental health issues, just the way we talk about other health issues.

Tell the stories of how it is and how it could be, dealing with mental health.

Your stories.

The stories of those you know or knew or love/d.

How it is in our society today.

How it was then.
